United Nations International Migrants Day Exhibition

Australia is celebrating the International Migrants Day on the 18th December 2011.

I am pleased to announce that my video work, "Garbage Bag, 2011" will be part of the exhibition, "Pop-Up Migrants" curated by Matteo Rubbettino. Pop-up Migrants will be focused on migrants who have crossed borders to Australia and slowly contributed to shape the Australian culture.

Pop-Up Migrants” is a compelling art show focused on migrants’ experience in Australia who historically “crossed borders” to a new environment where they were strangers at first, then disorientated, then little by little contributing to shape Australian culture.
The term Pop-Up is intended to recall the situation in which unexpected diversity intervenes to "shake things up".

This project has been created to represent Australia for the action initiated by the Immigrant Movement International from the US and to celebrate the International Migrants Day designated by the United Nations.

All the artists included in the program responded with a work of art to the Migrant Manifesto, published on the 4th of November 2011 and that you will find attached below.

Artist Statement

Water expresses beauty, peacefulness and the idea of feminism. However, water becomes violent by human body actions, facial expression as well as effects from the reaction between two things- body and water, objects and water, body and fabrics. Kawita Vatanajyankur uses human bodies, including her own, as a mediu

m to experiment different water effects and document them in videos and photographs. Each of her performances aim to reveal the reaction of human body, how it visually appears in different times, light and place. By the use of water and fabrics with human bodies, shapes and forms of the body always change and sometimes represent an idea of struggle, anxiety and lost by the uncomfortable atmosphere.

This video work is a continuation of my water-based objects experimentation last year with water balloons. As the balloons exploded, in a slow motion, the form slowly changed and transformed to another object matter, water. In this work, I was interested in how objects visually change, how they distort and effect the figure of the human body visually from human's action.

In this video, I again looked at the effects of water and how it visually effected the human body by using water and a huge rectangular glass for the experimentation. Gently and slowly, water was running over the glass that sat on top of the male's body, creating this computer-like effect that distorted the male's figure and made him appear almost transparent.
